On Thursday morning, Warner Bros. dropped the long-awaited, for me anyway, trailer for the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Tony-Award winning hit In the Heights!
In the Heights follows several people, primarily the main character, Usnavi, in a mostly-hispanic neighborhood around Washington Heights over the course of three VERY hot days. (sidetone: the origin of his name is a fantastic story that I hope they mention in the movie)
The film is directed by Crazy Rich Asians director, John M. Chu. It stars Anthony Ramos, who starred in the show on Broadway, and was most recently in “A Star is Born” as Lady Gaga’s best friend. Corey Hawkins, Marc Anthony, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Melissa Barrera, Jimmy Smits, Dascha Polanco and Stephanie Beatriz. Lin-Manuel Miranda also plays a “small” role with two delicious songs.
The film has been in the works for almost ten years. The Weinstein Company was set to release the film but due to the collapse of the company due to his legal and personal issues, Warner Bros. stepped in to release the film.
I think nine to ten year gap between rights to distribution is a blessing in disguise, as over the last five years, Lin-Manuel’s popularity has grown exponentially due to Hamilton: The Musical, Moana, and his focus on helping relief being sent to Puerto Rico. In the Heights was already a blockbuster, but Hamilton and Moana sent Miranda into a new stratosphere.
If I won the lotto, the $96,000 would go to seeing this movie as many times as possible.
I officially can’t wait until June 26, 2020.
